Make Them Partners

Involving your kids in the planning of the trip can be highly beneficial. If your kids are old enough, let them help with the planning. If they’re too small, keep them engaged by explaining the journey ahead of time. Making them partners can help in many ways:

• It helps them grow and learn responsibility.
• They can read, research, and choose activities.
• It teaches them teamwork.
• They learn about the destination, its history, things to do, and what to expect.

Trips can be overwhelming with many new experiences, especially if your kids are not used to travel. Preparation can help them feel more comfortable and ensure a smoother trip for everyone.

For younger kids, go over the trip plan with them. Show them pictures, a map with the trip itinerary, and explain the agenda at a high level. These steps will help them know what to expect. You can even let them prepare their own trip plan based on the places discussed and use it during the trip to help them track where they are.

Remember, the airport, flights, staying in a new place, riding in a new car, and eating new foods are all part of the adventure.

For older kids, let them pick some activities they want to do. Take this opportunity to discuss your expectations for their behavior during the trip.

Make your kids part of the trip planning right from the start. It will result in a happier trip for everyone. Give them options of activities to choose from and involve them in the decision-making process.
