intro
Opened in 2014, the Market Hall (Markthal) is now one of Rotterdam's most impressive architectural structures. It's also one of the most popular gathering points in Rotterdam. This complex contains the largest indoor market in the Netherlands, along with residential and office buildings. The apartments oversee the great view from one side and the market from the other. Local nickname the structure as "Koopboog" (Horseshoe) thanks to its unique arched shape. Inside, you'll find the soaring food hall with any food type you could imagine. The arched ceiling is painted with the biggest painting in Europe, featuring murals of vegetables, foods, flowers, and butterflies. Along with all the food booths, you'll find classy restaurants and a big grocery store.
Additional Information
The market stalls are open from Monday through Thursday and Saturday from 10:00 to 20:00. Friday 10:00 to 21:00. Sunday 12:00 to 18:00. The market has plenty of parking immediately beneath it.
The market is very accessible. It's 5 minutes walk from Rotterdam center and right next to the train station. It also offers plenty of underground parking if needed. Right across the street, you can visit the Cube Houses, and the Old Harbour are right across the street. Outside there is a public park which is a great way to enjoy a sunny afternoon. There's also an outdoor market next to it that opens on Tuesdays and Saturdays with hundreds of stalls. Once the market sets down in the evening, great restaurants outside remain open much later, providing a great atmosphere all day long. The view of the building is beautiful any time of the day and even more impressive and less crowded as the sun goes down. Just don't visit too late since the market will be closed.
