Always Hold Your Car Door with Two Hands

Categories: Transportation

One of the most common and expensive types of damage to rental cars in Iceland isn't from collisions but from the wind. Icelandic winds are notoriously powerful and can pick up in seconds. If you open your car door without a firm grip, the wind can catch it and "catch the door," swinging it forward with enough force to bend the hinges or even rip the door off entirely.

Most standard insurance packages do not cover "blown-off doors." When you park, try to face the car into the wind. Regardless of the weather, always keep both hands on the door handle when entering or exiting. This small habit can save you a $2,000+ repair bill.
