Avoid Dark Blue and Pure Black Clothing

While neutral safari attire is often dismissed as a cinematic cliché, avoiding specific dark colors is a matter of physical comfort and safety. Tsetse flies, common in mopane woodlands and riverine forests, possess visual receptors uniquely drawn to dark blue and black hues. Wearing these colors turns you into an immediate target for their sharp, painful bites.
Additionally, avoid brilliant stark white clothing, which stands out dramatically against the bush and can alert skittish wildlife from hundreds of meters away, causing animals to retreat before your guide can maneuver into viewing position. Pack lightweight clothing in khaki, olive, beige, sand, or brown. Long sleeves and lightweight trousers also provide essential physical barriers against biting midges, morning chill, and thorny branches during off-road tracking.
