Beat the Amalias Avenue Traffic

Many first-time visitors are shocked to find that Hadrian's Arch sits directly on the edge of Leoforos Vasilisis Amalias, one of the busiest multi-lane avenues in Athens. The constant roar of scooters, buses, and cars can easily ruin the ancient atmosphere of this 2nd-century monument.

To enjoy the arch in relative peace, plan your visit for early morning (before 8:00 AM) on a Sunday, when city traffic is at its absolute lowest. Alternatively, head to one of the rooftop cafes or hotel bars in the adjacent Plaka neighborhood. From these elevated spots, you can sip a Greek frappe while admiring the arch and the Temple of Olympian Zeus without the exhaust fumes and noise.
