Beat the Day-Tripper Rush

A serene canal in Giethoorn at sunrise with thatched-roof cottages and wooden bridges reflected in the calm water.
Categories: Traveling | Accommodation

Giethoorn is world-famous for its idyllic, car-free canals, but between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM, it can feel more like a crowded theme park than a peaceful Dutch village. To truly experience its magical, fairytale atmosphere, you must plan your visit early in the morning (before 10:00 AM) or in the late afternoon (after 6:00 PM).

During these golden hours, the tour buses have either not yet arrived or already departed. You will have the reflection of the thatched-roof cottages on the glassy water all to yourself, and the local birds will be the only sound you hear. If you can, book an overnight stay in the village to effortlessly enjoy these quiet windows of time.
