Capture Sunset Over the Acropolis Without the Crowds

Golden hour view of Philopappos Hill overlooking the distant illuminated Acropolis in Athens.
Categories: Traveling | General

While most tourists pack onto Areopagus Hill for sunset, Philopappos Hill offers an equally breathtaking—and far less congested—panoramic view of the Acropolis and the Saronic Gulf. Position yourself near the marble Monument of Philopappos at the summit roughly 45 minutes before dusk to watch the golden light hit the Parthenon.

Bring a small picnic or refreshment, as there are no vendor kiosks at the top. Stay until the floodlights turn on over the ancient Citadel, but be sure to descend before total darkness sets in, as lighting along the dirt trails is minimal.
