Carry Small Bills for Easier Transactions Abroad

In many countries around the world, especially outside of major cities, cash is still king. Local markets, street vendors, taxis, small eateries, and even some guesthouses often prefer — or only accept — cash payments. What's crucial is carrying small denominations. Large bills like $50 or $100 can be difficult for vendors to break, and some places may even refuse them altogether.
Whenever you withdraw cash from an ATM or exchange currency, ask for smaller bills like $1, $5, $10, or equivalent local denominations. It's also smart to double-check bills for any tears or damage—many businesses won’t accept torn or overly worn notes.
ATMs are generally available in cities, but access can be limited or unreliable in rural or remote areas, so plan ahead if your travels take you off the beaten path. Having a pocketful of small, crisp bills makes daily purchases far smoother and less stressful.
