Carry Small Cash for Village Honesty Shops

Rustic wooden honesty shop display with Swiss alpine cheese and artisanal sausages in Gimmelwald.
Categories: Dining | Preparation | General

Gimmelwald does not have a conventional supermarket or commercial bank. Instead, local farming families maintain charming honesty shops (Selbstbedienung) in rustic wooden sheds and self-serve refrigerators along the main village walking trail.

Here you can purchase freshly made raw-milk mountain cheese (Alpkäse), cured sausages (Landjäger), farm-fresh eggs, and homemade fruit syrups. You must calculate your total and drop physical cash into a secure metal money box. Carry plenty of small Swiss Franc (CHF) coins and small banknotes, as change is rarely available and digital payments outside the Swiss TWINT app are generally unsupported.
