Catch the Sunday Grand Parade with the Military Band

A battalion of Evzones in full ceremonial white dress marching along an Athens street accompanied by a military brass band.
Categories: Preparation | Traveling

While hourly guard shifts feature only a few soldiers in standard khaki or wool uniforms, the Sunday 11:00 AM ceremony is an elaborate military spectacle. The entire Evzone unit marches in full ceremonial dress—featuring the iconic white pleated foustanella skirts made of 400 folds and hand-embroidered vests—accompanied by an energetic live military brass band.

To make the most of this event, position yourself along Herodou Attikou or Vassilissis Sofias Avenue around 10:30 AM to watch the battalion march out from their barracks behind the National Garden. Because Sunday mornings bring temporary street closures around the government quarter, plan to arrive entirely on foot from the Syntagma or Evangelismos metro stations.
