Check Wind Warnings Before Taking the Lift

Panoramic view of Dunkirk harbor and the North Sea from the stone balcony of Saint-Eloi belfry.
Categories: Preparation | Health & Safety

Unlike many medieval belfries that demand an arduous 250-plus step ascent, the Saint-Eloi belfry features an elevator that transports visitors up to the fifth level. From there, only 64 spiral stone steps separate you from the 58-meter-high open-air observation platform.

Because Dunkirk sits directly on the North Sea coast, gusts can be fierce. The outdoor viewing deck is occasionally closed during high-wind alerts for visitor safety, even if the lower museum floors remain open. Always check conditions at the ground-floor tourist office before buying your ticket to ensure you will be allowed onto the open rooftop walkway.
