Discover the Wall's Sovereign History

The colorful John Lennon Wall set against the historic stone arches of the Knights of Malta Grand Priory.
Categories: General

What many visitors do not realize is that the John Lennon Wall does not belong to the city of Prague. It is actually owned by the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (the Knights of Malta), whose Grand Priory is located directly behind the wall. This unique ownership is historically significant; during the communist era, the Knights' sovereign status made it difficult for the state police to permanently crack down on the anti-regime graffiti painted here.

While you are there, take a moment to look at the adjacent Church of Our Lady Under the Chain. It is one of the oldest churches in the Mala Strana district, and its quiet courtyard offers a stark, contemplative contrast to the vibrant, loud energy of the wall itself.
