Dodge the Astronomical Clock Pickpocket Crush

The medieval Prague Astronomical Clock mounted on the stone wall of Old Town Hall in warm afternoon light.
Categories: Traveling | Health & Safety

Every hour on the hour between 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM, hundreds of visitors gather beneath the Prague Astronomical Clock (Orloj) on the southern wall of the Old Town Hall. While the procession of the Apostles is a classic Prague spectacle, the dense crowd gazing upward creates an ideal environment for opportunistic pickpockets.

Instead of standing packed in the middle of the crowd, position yourself slightly to the side near the corner of U Radnice street, or purchase entry to the Old Town Hall Tower roughly 15 minutes before the hour. The tower observation deck provides a panoramic view over the red-roofed square and lets you observe the mechanical chimes and the gathered crowd from a secure, elevated vantage point.
