Before rushing past, take a few minutes to circle the exterior of the 11th-century church. Panagia Kapnikarea is one of the oldest surviving Christian monuments in Athens, constructed around 1050 AD over the ruins of an ancient temple dedicated to either Athena or Demeter. The exterior features classic cloisonné masonry, where rectangular stone blocks are framed by thin red terracotta tiles.

Look closely at the lower foundation courses and exterior walls to spot spolia—repurposed architectural fragments from classical antiquity, including carved marble reliefs, Roman column drums, and decorative friezes incorporated directly into the Byzantine brickwork. You will also notice decorative pseudo-Kufic brick patterns reflecting medieval Mediterranean cultural exchanges.
