Guard Your Valuables

A dense crowd of tourists gathered in Prague's Old Town Square, watching the Astronomical Clock, illustrating a typical busy scene.
Categories: Traveling | Health & Safety

The area immediately surrounding the Astronomical Clock, particularly during the hourly show, becomes an extremely dense gathering of people. Unfortunately, this dense gathering of distracted tourists also attracts opportunistic pickpockets. While Prague is generally a safe city, popular tourist hotspots like the Old Town Square are always targets for petty crime.

Always be vigilant. Keep your bags zipped and close to your body, preferably across your front. Avoid putting wallets, phones, or passports in back pockets. If you're carrying a backpack, wear it on your front in crowded areas, or use a secure, anti-theft design. Be especially cautious when you're distracted by the clock's performance, taking photos, or navigating through the throngs of people. A moment of inattention is all a skilled pickpocket needs. Consider using a money belt or a secure travel pouch for your most important documents and cash to minimize risk.
