Master the Slippery Marble and Pikionis Paths

Close-up of a stone and marble paved pathway surrounded by pine trees on Philopappos Hill.
Categories: Preparation | Health & Safety

The main stone pathway leading up Philopappos Hill was designed in the 1950s by renowned Greek architect Dimitris Pikionis. While visually stunning and seamlessly blended into the landscape, the polished marble stones and worn limestone tracks can become extremely slippery, even when completely dry.

Ditch sandals or smooth-soled city shoes in favor of footwear with strong rubber traction. If you are exploring off the main paved trail towards the prison of Socrates or the Pnyx, expect loose gravel and uneven bedrock, making sturdy sneakers or light hiking shoes essential for safety.
