Master the TGV Booking Window

France's high-speed train network (TGV) is phenomenal, but ticket prices operate like airline fares: they skyrocket as the departure date approaches. To get the best deals, you must book your tickets the moment the booking window opens, which is typically 3 to 4 months in advance.

Use the official 'SNCF Connect' app to book. Be aware of the two tiers of high-speed trains: 'Inoui' (the premium, traditional TGV with a cafe car and generous luggage allowances) and 'Ouigo' (the budget TGV). Ouigo tickets can be astonishingly cheap, but they come with strict, airline-style luggage restrictions and no onboard Wi-Fi or food unless you pay extra.

If you plan to take multiple train trips, look into the 'Carte Avantage' discount cards. They cost around 49 Euros for a year but cap maximum ticket prices and offer 30% off fares, often paying for themselves on the very first round trip.
