Master Transit Pickpocket Awareness

Busy Monastiraki Square and metro station entrance in Athens at dusk with illuminated surroundings.
Categories: Health & Safety | Transportation

Monastiraki Square and its adjacent metro station serve as one of the major transit hubs in Athens, connecting Line 1 and Line 3. Because of the intense pedestrian volume, it is also a primary zone for organized pickpocketing, particularly around train doors and platform escalators.

Keep your backpack worn on your front when navigating the crowded square or entering metro cars. Never keep smartphones or wallets in back pockets, and be especially cautious if a group creates a sudden bump or distraction near the sliding doors of the train.
