Navigate the Split-Level Canals

Unlike Amsterdam, Utrecht features unique split-level canals (Oudegracht and Nieuwegracht) lined with historic wharf cellars (werfkelders) that sit right at water level. Today, these medieval cellars house vibrant cafes, restaurants, and boutique shops. When booking a dinner or a drink, try to secure a table directly on the waterside wharves for an intimate, car-free dining experience.

However, be mindful of the steep, narrow stone stairs leading down from the street level to the canals. They can be incredibly slippery when wet. If you have mobility issues or heavy luggage, look for the occasional ramp access points or stick to the street-level terraces which offer equally stunning views of the canal action from above.
