Never Drive a Rental Car Into Sintra's Historic Center

Driving a private rental car into Sintra is one of the most common tourist mistakes. The municipal government has closed central mountain roads (including Estrada da Pena) to unauthorized private vehicles. Fines are steep, traffic jams on the narrow hairpin roads are notorious, and parking is practically non-existent.

Take the direct CP commuter train from Lisbon's Rossio or Oriente station straight to Sintra terminus (approximately 40 minutes). From the station, navigate the hill using the official Scotturb 434 tourist bus, licensed tuk-tuks, or local rideshare options. Walking between the historic town center, Quinta da Regaleira, and the National Palace is completely feasible on foot.
