Observe Harbor Seals Respectfully at Pointe du Hourdel

Categories: Traveling | Preparation
The estuary hosts the largest colony of harbor seals and grey seals in France, with Pointe du Hourdel offering the most reliable viewing opportunities. The animals haul out onto exposed sandbanks to rest, regulate their body temperature, and nurse their young during low tide.
To protect these sensitive marine mammals, strict conservation guidelines mandate remaining at least 300 meters away. Never attempt to approach them on foot, as stress can cause mothers to abandon vulnerable pups or force the colony into the freezing water. Bring high-powered binoculars or a 400mm+ telephoto lens, and plan your visit roughly two to three hours before dead low tide for optimal viewing from behind the marked shore boundaries.
