Pack Winter Layers for Škocjan and Postojna Caves

Vast underground limestone cavern with massive rock formations and a subtle lighted footbridge across a gorge.
Categories: Packing | Traveling

Slovenia is renowned for its vast underground karst landscapes, most notably the colossal canyon of the UNESCO-inscribed Škocjan Caves and the subterranean railway of Postojna Cave. However, regardless of how hot summer temperatures climb outdoors, the interior temperature of these underground networks remains fixed at 8°C to 12°C (46°F to 54°F) year-round with high humidity.

Guided cave excursions last anywhere from 90 minutes to two hours, and visitors dressed in shorts and flip-flops quickly become chilled. Pack a lightweight packable down jacket or thick fleece, full-length pants, and sturdy walking shoes with reliable traction, as the walkways and footbridges suspended over subterranean chasms are constantly damp and slick.
