Plan Around the Southern Riposo

Daily life in Puglia moves to a distinct rhythm dictated by the southern afternoon break, known locally as the riposo. Between 1:30 PM and 5:00 PM, shops, churches, pharmacies, and family-run businesses close their doors, and village streets empty out completely.
Do not plan shopping sprees or sightseeing excursions during these hours. Instead, adopt the local pace: linger over a long lunch, visit beach clubs, or rest in your accommodation. Most restaurants stop seating lunch patrons by 2:30 PM, and kitchens do not reopen for dinner until 8:00 PM or 8:30 PM.
If you arrive in a small town during the afternoon lull, expect limited dining options aside from seaside cafes or highway service stations. Plan your meals and museum visits around these set operational windows.
