Prioritize the Frozen-in-Time Musée Condé Galleries

Ornate 19th-century salon gallery in the Chateau de Chantilly lined with gilded paintings on deep red walls.
Categories: Traveling | General

The art collection housed in the Château de Chantilly is the second-largest collection of historic paintings in France after the Louvre. Due to the strict bequest of Henri d'Orléans, Duke of Aumale, none of the artworks may ever be loaned to outside museums, nor can the layout of the galleries ever be modified.

Because of this stipulation, you will experience masterworks by Raphael, Poussin, and Delacroix displayed precisely as they were hung in the late nineteenth century. Visit these galleries first thing in the morning when natural light streams through the tall windows and large tour groups have yet to arrive, allowing an intimate, unhurried view of historic masterpieces.
