Select Seats Carefully for Sightlines and English Surtitles

Because the Historic Building was constructed in the late 19th century following classic horseshoe opera architecture, certain seats in the side boxes (lóže) and upper galleries (galerie) suffer from severe side angles or support-pillar obstructions. When selecting seats on the official ticketing system, look out for warnings indicating restricted visibility (omezená viditelnost), which are priced cheaply but may require leaning over the velvet railing for the entire three-hour duration.

For non-Czech speakers attending operas or plays, ensure your vantage point allows you to see the English surtitle ribbon mounted above the proscenium arch. Alternatively, modern performances at the State Opera feature individual seatback translation tablets, whereas the historic riverfront hall primarily uses the overhead digital banner, best seen from the center stalls (přízemí) or front rows of the first balcony (I. balkon).
