Skip the Crowded Chapel Terrace

View from the rocky slopes of Mount Lycabettus looking across Athens toward the illuminated Acropolis at dusk.
Categories: Traveling | General

The main observation deck surrounding the whitewashed Chapel of St. George (Agios Georgios) at the summit becomes shoulder-to-shoulder standing room during sunset. This makes capturing photos of the distant Acropolis difficult without getting other tourists in your shot.

Instead of crowding onto the top platform, descend slightly to the rocky western ledges along the walking trail just below the chapel, or head toward the wide open space near the Lycabettus Theatre. These alternative vantage points offer identical, wide-angle photos of the Parthenon and Aegean Sea with a fraction of the crowds.
