Spot Ancient Relics at the Little Mitropoli

Directly adjacent to the grand cathedral stands the tiny Church of St. Eleftherios, affectionately known as the Little Mitropoli. Built in the 12th century, this remarkable Byzantine church was constructed almost entirely using spolia—recycled marble relief panels from ancient Greek, Roman, and early Christian structures.

Take ten minutes to walk around the exterior walls of this smaller church before or after entering the main cathedral. You will spot ancient friezes depicting zodiac signs, classical athletic games, and early Christian crosses carved directly into the ancient marble blocks.
