In France, 'Bonjour' is not just a greeting; it is an essential social contract. Entering a shop, approaching a waiter, or asking a stranger for directions without first saying 'Bonjour' (or 'Bonsoir' after 5 PM) is considered incredibly rude. It signals that you view the person as a servant rather than an equal human being.

Always make eye contact and say 'Bonjour, Monsieur' or 'Bonjour, Madame' before asking a question or ordering. This single, simple word will drastically change the level of service and warmth you receive. When leaving, a polite 'Merci, au revoir' is equally expected.
