Walk the Basilica's Historic Labyrinth

Interior of Saint-Quentin Basilica showing sunbeams illuminating an ancient stone labyrinth on the nave floor.
Categories: Traveling | General

The monumental Basilique Saint-Quentin towers over the city with a blend of Gothic architectural phases spanning the 12th to the 15th centuries. Unlike many northern French churches, it features a double transept design modeled on English cathedrals of the period.

Inside the nave, locate the black-and-white stone labyrinth set into the paving stones, dating back to the late 15th century. Walking this continuous path was historically performed as a symbolic pilgrimage for devotees who could not travel to Jerusalem. Be sure to check access to the subterranean crypt below the choir, which holds the relics of Saint Quentin himself.
