Things to Avoid

• Visiting Outside of Summer: The hiking season is very short (roughly June to September). Outside of this period, the mountain passes are covered in snow and impassable.
• Being Unprepared: The Alps are a serious mountain environment. Do not attempt to hike without proper gear, fitness, and preparation.
• Driving to Theth: The road to the village of Theth is extremely challenging and should only be attempted with a proper 4x4 and significant experience. It's better to use local transport.
• Expecting Modern Luxuries: Accommodation in the mountain villages is in simple, family-run guesthouses with basic amenities.

Local Transportation Tips

The city of Shkoder is the main transport hub for the county. From here, you must take organized minivans ('furgons') to get to the Komani Lake ferry and then onwards to Valbona. To reach Theth, you will need to arrange for a local 4x4 driver. A standard rental car is not suitable for exploring the heart of the Alps.
