Skip the Funicular: Free Escalator & Elevator Route to Buda Castle & Fisherman's Bastion

Categories: Traveling | Transportation
When planning your ascent to the historic Castle District to see the Buda Castle and Fisherman's Bastion, save your money and skip the expensive Buda Castle Funicular. A fantastic, free alternative offers the exact same stunning views and a pleasant walk through beautiful gardens.
Here’s how to do it:
- Stand at the bottom of the funicular, facing uphill (with the Chain Bridge behind you).
- Walk to your left for just 2-3 minutes along the riverbank towards the beautiful, neo-Renaissance complex of the Várkert Bazár (Castle Garden Bazaar).
- Enter the complex at Budapest, Ybl Miklós tér 2, 1013 Hungary. Inside, take the first elevator, then the escalators, and then a second elevator to the 2nd floor. It takes 1-2 minutes and takes you all the way up the 70-meter elevation to the southern end of the Royal Palace grounds, completely free of charge.
From the top, it's an easy, flat walk through the charming streets of the Castle District to both the Royal Palace/National Gallery and the Fisherman's Bastion/Matthias Church area. The
Várkert Bazár route is not only budget-friendly but also a scenic experience in its own right through the royal gardens.
Keep in mind:
- The escalators typically run from 10:00 AM to late evening.
- If the escalators are closed, bus 16 from Deák Ferenc Square is a reliable, budget-friendly public transport alternative for reaching the top of Castle Hill.
