Beware the Slippery Marble

Athens is a city built on and with marble. While beautiful, centuries of foot traffic have polished the stone pathways to a glass-like finish. This is especially true on Areopagus Hill (Mars Hill) next to the Acropolis, the steps of the Acropolis itself, and the charming but steep streets of Plaka and Anafiotika.

Even on completely dry days, these surfaces are notoriously treacherous. When it rains, they become veritable ice rinks. Leave the smooth-soled sandals, heels, and fashion flats at the hotel when exploring the historical center.

Pack and wear sturdy walking shoes or sneakers with excellent rubber grip. If you are climbing Areopagus Hill for the sunset view, use the modern metal staircase rather than the ancient rock-cut steps, which have claimed countless tourists' ankles and cameras.
