Catch Morning Sunlight on Alfons Mucha's Stained Glass

Vibrant blue and gold Art Nouveau stained glass window set in stone arches inside St. Vitus Cathedral.
Categories: General | Traveling

While St. Vitus Cathedral houses dozens of spectacular Gothic and Neo-Gothic windows, its most celebrated modern masterpiece is the Art Nouveau stained glass window created by Alfons Mucha in 1931. Located in the third chapel on the north side, it vividly depicts Saints Cyril and Methodius alongside scenes from Slavic Christian history.

Because the window sits on the northern wall, direct southern sunlight does not illuminate it. Instead, the optimal viewing window occurs during mid-to-late morning when ambient daylight reflects through the nave from the eastern apse windows, igniting the intense cobalt blues, deep ochres, and fiery reds without washing out the delicate, painted facial expressions. Bring a small monocular or a telephoto camera lens, as the fine tempera paint details on the glass are best appreciated up close.
