Time the Great South Tower Climb for Clear Vistas

View over Prague's red roofs and the Vltava River from high atop the gothic stone tower of St. Vitus Cathedral.
Categories: Traveling | Preparation

Climbing the 287 spiral stone steps of the Great South Tower offers one of the finest vantage points over Prague, but queue lines and afternoon glare can diminish the experience. The tower operates on a separate ticket from the standard Prague Castle historic circuits, meaning you can tackle it first thing in the morning before the inner courtyard fills with tour groups.

Aim to arrive right at opening time, typically 9:00 AM or 10:00 AM depending on the season. In the early morning, the light strikes the eastern facades of Mala Strana and Old Town across the Vltava River without harsh shadows, giving you exceptional visibility of Charles Bridge and the surrounding terracotta rooftops. Wear sturdy shoes with good grip, as the narrow, winding spiral stairs are polished smooth from centuries of foot traffic.
