Conquer the Cabot Trail Clockwise

Aerial view of the Cabot Trail, a winding road along the coast of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, with the ocean on the right.
Categories: Preparation | Traveling | Transportation

When planning your epic road trip along Nova Scotia's world-renowned Cabot Trail, a critical decision is which direction to drive. While both offer stunning vistas, driving the loop clockwise (starting from Baddeck or Ingonish and heading north/west) offers a distinct advantage: the ocean will consistently be on your right-hand side.

This means unobstructed, breathtaking views of the Atlantic coastline and dramatic cliffs without having to cross traffic lanes or make U-turns for photo opportunities. It also places you closer to the pull-offs and scenic lookouts, making spontaneous stops safer and more convenient. Plan for at least two full days, ideally three, to truly savor the experience without rushing. This allows time for hiking, exploring charming villages, and enjoying local cuisine.

Be sure to fuel up your vehicle before embarking on longer stretches, especially within Cape Breton Highlands National Park, as gas stations can be sparse. Cell service can also be intermittent in certain areas, so download offline maps and any essential information beforehand. Pack layers, as coastal weather can change rapidly, and bring plenty of water and snacks.
