Decode the Moto-Taxi System

Navigating Rwanda's hilly terrain is fastest on the back of a moto-taxi (motorcycle). To ride like a local, always look for drivers wearing official numbered vests. By law, they must provide you with a clean helmet, which often includes a thin hygienic hairnet underneath. Always ensure the strap is buckled before the ride starts.

While bargaining used to be the norm, many motos in Kigali now use taximeters (look for the Yego brand). If there is no meter, agree on the price before sitting down. Keep your knees tucked in close to the bike, and avoid sudden shifts in weight as you wind through the scenic, sweeping curves of the land of a thousand hills.
