Drink Freely from Historic Public Fountains

Clear fresh water pouring from an ornate stone fountain spout in a village square.
Categories: Health & Safety | Packing

Never waste money buying bottled water when exploring towns and mountain villages. The vast majority of municipal fountains found in public squares and along hiking trails flow constantly with fresh, ice-cold spring water that exceeds standard bottled mineral water in purity.

Carrying a refillable metal or silicone water bottle lets you hydrate throughout your trip for zero cost. The only fountains to avoid are those bearing an explicit sign that reads Kein Trinkwasser or Eau non potable, indicating non-potable decorative water.
