Factor in Meltemi Wind Delays for Ferries

When planning an island-hopping itinerary, never book a domestic ferry on the exact same day as your international flight home. During July and August, strong northern Aegean winds known as the Meltemi regularly reach force 7 or 8 on the Beaufort scale, prompting coast guard bans on passenger vessels.

High-speed catamarans are the most vulnerable to rough sea cancellations and induce severe seasickness. If traveling on windy days, choose larger, conventional roll-on/roll-off ferries like Blue Star Ferries over smaller sea jets, as their heavy displacement handles rough open water with far greater stability and fewer schedule disruptions.
