Layer Up for Open-Vehicle Safari Drives

Many travelers pack exclusively for warm weather, but dawn and dusk game drives in open-sided 4x4 vehicles are remarkably frigid, especially between May and September. The wind chill created by a moving safari vehicle in early morning bush air can cut through standard jackets within minutes. Layering is crucial: begin with a thermal base, add a thick fleece or wool mid-layer, and finish with a windbreaker, warm beanie, and light gloves.
As the mid-morning sun rises, you can gradually peel away layers down to a breathable short-sleeve shirt. For clothing colors, stick exclusively to muted earth tones such as khaki, olive, and taupe. Avoid bright white because it stands out starkly to wildlife, dark blue and black because they attract biting insects, and military camouflage patterns, which are strictly reserved for local defense personnel.
