Be Prepared for Mountain Driving in Bulgaria

Driving through Bulgaria’s mountain regions—like Bansko, Rila, or the Rhodopes—can be scenic and memorable, but it also requires preparation. Rural roads in these areas are often narrow, winding, and not always well maintained. In winter, snow and ice make conditions even more dangerous.
If you're renting a car, choose a 4x4 model and ask whether snow chains are included. Even with good equipment, always check the weather forecast and consult locals or your hotel about current road conditions before setting off. Some routes that look fast on GPS may be risky or impassable in bad weather.
Stick to daylight hours when possible and drive slowly on steep inclines or sharp turns. This isn’t the place to rush—it’s better to arrive late than slide off a snowy roadside.
