Ride Like a Local: Colectivos & Public Transport

While taxis and ride-sharing apps are convenient, embracing Mexico's public transportation, especially "colectivos," offers a truly authentic and budget-friendly travel experience. Colectivos are shared vans or sometimes larger taxis that run fixed routes, picking up and dropping off passengers along the way. They are ubiquitous in many regions, particularly the Yucatán Peninsula, Oaxaca, and central Mexico, connecting towns, beaches, and archaeological sites.

To use a colectivo, simply stand on the side of the road along a known route and flag one down. The driver will often honk or flash lights if they have space and are going your way. Confirm your destination with the driver before getting in. Fares are incredibly affordable, usually paid in cash upon boarding or exiting. It's a fantastic way to observe local life and interact (even with just a smile) with fellow passengers.

For longer distances between cities, Mexico boasts an excellent, comfortable, and affordable bus network, with ADO being the most prominent and reliable operator, especially in the south and east. Their first-class buses offer reclining seats, air conditioning, and even entertainment. Booking tickets online in advance or at bus terminals is recommended, particularly for popular routes or during holidays.
