South Slope Acropolis Hack

Most visitors to the Acropolis instinctively head to the main western entrance (Propylaea). This is a mistake, as it's where all the massive tour groups and cruise ship excursions bottleneck. Instead, head to the South Slope entrance near the Acropolis Museum (Dionysus Theater entrance).

By arriving at this entrance right when it opens at 8:00 AM, or about two hours before closing, you will bypass the worst of the crowds. The walk up from the South Slope is also much more scenic and gradual, taking you past the Theatre of Dionysus and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus before you reach the summit.

Remember to buy your tickets online in advance through the official Hellenic Heritage e-ticketing site to skip the ticket booth line entirely. During the summer months, this strategy not only saves you hours of waiting but also spares you from the brutal midday Athenian sun.
