Spend Local Banknotes Before Leaving

Categories: Preparation | General
Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom and uses the British Pound Sterling (GBP), not the Euro. However, several Northern Irish commercial banks (such as Ulster Bank, Danske Bank, and Bank of Ireland) print their own sterling banknotes. While these notes are legal currency throughout the entire UK, merchants in England, Scotland, and Wales frequently refuse them simply because retail cashiers are unfamiliar with their design.
To avoid unwanted currency friction, rely primarily on contactless debit or credit cards, which are accepted virtually everywhere. If you do withdraw or receive paper money, aim to spend all Northern Irish-branded notes before taking a flight or ferry out of the region.
