Time Your Visit for the Tower Climb

To truly appreciate the striking contrast between Rotterdam's medieval past and its futuristic present, you must climb the tower of the Great St. Lawrence Church (known locally as the Laurenstoren). Unlike many European cathedrals where you can climb the tower daily, this historic tower is typically only accessible via guided tours on specific days of the week, usually from April to October. Booking your ticket online in advance is highly recommended as group sizes are strictly limited for safety.

The climb consists of 300 steps up a narrow spiral staircase, but the reward at the top is a spectacular 360-degree view of the city. From the viewing platform, you can see the famous Cube Houses, the Markthal, and the Erasmus Bridge. It is one of the few vantage points where you can clearly see the exact boundary where the old medieval city ended and the modern post-war reconstruction began.
