Khorezm Region

The Khorezm Region is dominated by the Kyzylkum Desert, and its history and culture have been shaped by its location as an oasis. The main city of Khiva was a crucial stop for caravans on the Silk Road and later became infamous as a center of the slave trade. Today, its main draw is the incredible Itchan Kala, a complete walled city with over 50 monuments, including mosques, minarets, and palaces, all packed into a small area.

Unlike other Silk Road cities, the Itchan Kala has few modern intrusions, making it the most cohesive and immersive historical experience in Uzbekistan. Wandering its quiet, sandy lanes in the early morning or late evening is a magical experience. The region's remote location adds to its sense of mystique and adventure.

• Forgetting the Main Ticket: Access to most of the main historical sites within the Itchan Kala requires a single, unified ticket purchased at the main gate.
• A Rushed Visit: While small, the city has many hidden corners. Give yourself at least one full day, and preferably an overnight stay, to truly soak it in.

Local Transportation Tips

The city of Khiva is the main destination in the Khorezm Region. Its inner city, the Itchan Kala, is pedestrian-only. The nearest airport and main train station are in the city of Urgench, which is a 30-45 minute taxi or trolleybus ride away from Khiva. A new train line directly to Khiva has also recently opened.

• Respect the Residents: Remember that while it feels like a museum, people still live within the walls of the Itchan Kala. Be respectful of their privacy.
• Bargaining: Friendly bargaining is expected at the souvenir stalls.
• Modest Dress: When entering mosques and mausoleums, ensure your shoulders and knees are covered.
• Tipping: Tipping is not widely expected but is appreciated for good service.
