Macocha Abyss
the Macocha Abyss in Czechia

Intro

The Macocha Abyss, also known as the Macocha Gorge, is the deepest sinkhole in Central Europe. This impressive, 138 meters (452 feet) deep, located near Brno, is part of the Punkva Caves, and the Punkva River flows through it. It's a popular tourist site, suitable for different types of travelers, including casual and more advanced visitors, who have more advanced technical caving experience. The gorge trip includes two main parts. One with its grand domes and deep abysses, and the other section is a web of caves with stalagmites formations. There are two viewing platforms to immerse the view of the gorge. The Upper Bridge was constructed in 1882, and the Lower Bridge was built in 1899. While the top-down view of the gorge is complimentary for all to admire, roaming the Punkevni Jeskyne (caves) would require an entrance fee.

Additional Information

The abyss contains a maze of caves and galleries and several magnificent stalagmites and stalactites. These are accessible through a chain of underground passages and caves. It is about 275 meters (900 feet) in length and about 120 meters (390 feet) at its widest point. Macocha Gorge is part of a caves system including the Catherine Cave and a string of lakes such as the Punkva water caves, which you can access by boat.
The whole cave complex includes more than 30 kilometers of underground passages partly filled with water.
