Airport Metro Vigilance

Categories: Transportation

The Athens Metro is generally clean, efficient, and safe, but it harbors a highly organized network of pickpockets. They specifically target the Blue Line (which runs from the Airport to the city center) and the Green Line (connecting to the Piraeus ferry port), preying on tired, luggage-laden tourists.

The thieves often work in teams. A common tactic involves creating an artificial bottleneck at the train doors just as you are boarding or exiting, or staging a minor distraction (like dropping something or bumping into you) while an accomplice empties your pockets or unzips your daypack.

To protect yourself, never keep valuables in your pockets. Wear your backpack on your front when on the train, keep your hand physically over the zippers of your bags, and stand away from the doors if possible. If someone invades your personal space unnecessarily, be immediately on high alert.
