Reserve the Observation Carriage on the Kandy–Ella Train Early

Sri Lanka’s Kandy–Ella rail journey is legendary for its sweeping vistas of misty tea plantations and lush hill country—and nothing beats the view from the train’s dedicated observation carriage. These open‑air cars offer panoramic windows and doorways perfect for photos and fresh mountain air. However, there are only a handful of these carriages per train, and they sell out fast, especially during peak season.
To secure your spot, book through a trusted local agent or at the Kandy station ticket office at least two days in advance. If you miss out, arrive at the station two hours before departure and head straight to the platform agent to request any last‑minute cancellations. Even if you end up in a regular carriage, grab a window seat on the left side when traveling northbound (Ella → Kandy) or on the right when going southbound for the best views.
