A UNESCO World Heritage site, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a dense, ancient, and montane rainforest that is home to roughly half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas. This is one of the premier places on Earth to partake in the unforgettable and life-changing experience of gorilla trekking. The park's incredible biodiversity also includes chimpanzees, monkeys, and hundreds of bird species.
The name "Impenetrable Forest" is a fitting description for the dense, misty, and mysterious landscape of Bwindi. The park is characterized by steep ridges and deep valleys, making the trekking experience both challenging and incredibly rewarding. The primary activity is tracking one of the habituated gorilla families. Led by expert guides and trackers, small groups of visitors hike through the dense vegetation to spend one precious hour observing these magnificent and gentle creatures in their natural habitat.
The experience is highly regulated to ensure the safety and conservation of the gorillas. The high cost of the permits directly funds conservation efforts and supports local communities, making the visit a vital part of the gorillas' survival story. Beyond the gorillas, Bwindi offers opportunities for birdwatching, nature walks to waterfalls, and cultural visits to the local Batwa community.
Accessing Bwindi Impenetrable National Park requires a 4x4 vehicle. The park has several different trailheads (sectors) for trekking, and the road conditions can be very poor, especially in the wet season. Most visitors arrive as part of an organized safari with a dedicated vehicle and driver-guide.
Humans and gorillas share approximately 98% of their DNA, making them one of our closest living relatives. This genetic similarity is one reason why they are so vulnerable to human diseases.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is most suitable for fit and healthy Adults and older Teens due to the strict age limit and strenuous nature of gorilla trekking.
