Museum Speelklok in Utrecht, Netherlands

Intro

Museum Speelklok in Utrecht, the Netherlands, is without a doubt the most cheerful musical museum you'll visit. It is home to the world's most extensive collection of mechanical musical instruments, with over 600 instruments from all over the world, some of which are over 400 years old. During your visit, you'll hear cheerful live music surrounding you from centuries-old self-playing musical instruments.

Additional Information

It is located in a former factory building that was the home of the Dutch company N. J. Goudswaard & Zonen, which made musical instruments such as pianos and harpsichords.

Over the years, people's desire to be surrounded by music led to the invention of all sorts of self-playing musical instruments, such as musical boxes, musical clocks (carillon clocks), the singing nightingale, orchestrions (self-playing orchestras), and the traditional Dutch street organs. The museum has a highly skilled restoration workshop, which keeps the tools operational and playing for generations.
